Funding Model

Most of IAF's funding for operating and program delivery comes from the federal and provincial governments; support for special projects usually comes from individual and corporate donors, and community/private foundations.

IAF looks to the private sector to leverage the investment made by the public (government) sector.

The federal and provincial governments provide funding for most IAF program delivery and operating costs. IAF programs look to the private sector for special project funding and to top-up shortfalls in government funding. Private sector individuals and businesses donate funds for program delivery/operating costs, and for loan capital.

In additional to receiving support from private donors, IAF Alberta has access to loan capital through lines of credit with HSBC Bank Canada and RBC. Because IAF doesn't have the collateral to secure the lines of credit (the IAF loan portfolio is unsecured and cannot be used as collateral), it looks to philanthropically-minded business and community leaders to sign personal guarantees that secure the lines of credit. Being able to access loan capital from the lines of credit has allowed IAF the freedom to provide loans to as many people as are approved. As well, principal and interest payments made by loan recipients remain in the loan capital fund to help cover bad debt and IAF's costs of borrowing from the lines of credit.

Loan capital for the IAF Saskatchewan program has been provided by the Government of Canada's Foreign Recognition Credential Program and by private donors.

IAF Alberta and IAF Saskatchewan welcome donations for program delivery/operating costs and/or for their loan capital fund. Donations to benefit either program can be made to Immigrant Access Fund Society of Alberta, which is a registered charity (BN/Registration 862367182RR0001). Donors who would like their gift to be directed to benefit IAF Saskatchewan’s work may specify so. Information on supporting IAF's work can be found at:
